Today (March 30) is National Doctors’ Day. It is a day celebrated to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities. The first Doctors’ Day was observed in 1933. In 1953, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the designation of March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. Although supposed to be celebrated by patients in and benefactors of the healthcare industry, it is usually celebrated by health care organizations. Staff may organize a lunch for doctors during which physicians are presented with tokens of recognition.
Historically, a card or red carnation may be sent to physicians and their spouses, along with a flower being placed on the graves of deceased physicians.
To observe National Doctor’s Day UW Health is gathering notes of gratitude again this year for its more than 2,000 physicians in honor of National Doctors’ Day. Patients and loved ones can share a note of thanks and appreciation using the UW Health digital community card through today. These notes will appear on a single online platform and will be shared with all UW Health physicians.
These messages will be visible to others, so private or personal information should not be shared.
