“Place of Fairness, Not Fear”: Milwaukee County Acts After Courthouse ICE Arrests
MILWAUKEE, Wis – (WAUK) – The Milwaukee County Board voted Thursday on a measure meant to keep the courthouse a safe place. The resolution, passed 17-1 with one abstention, was created after recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests at the courthouse raised concerns in the community.
County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson said, “Our courthouse should be a place of fairness, not fear.” The resolution asks county leaders, the court, and the sheriff’s office to work together to make sure everyone’s rights are protected when they come to the courthouse. It also calls for more public education about people’s rights when dealing with immigration officers.
Supervisor Deanna Alexander, who supported the resolution, said, “Due process is a human right.” She added that the resolution does not ignore the law but focuses on treating everyone with dignity and fairness.
The resolution will now go to County Executive David Crowley for approval. It aims to make sure people can attend court hearings, get help, or support family members without worrying about being arrested by ICE.
The move comes after several recent arrests by ICE at the courthouse, which some say have made people afraid to use the justice system.
